Of course wanting to work in fashion and actually getting to are two very different things. For those of you trying to break into the industry it's really important that you get involved if you want to get noticed. You must be talented but without the right connections talent will only take you so far. Here are a few tips for getting involved!
- Pick your events wisely. Not every event is the right one for YOU to attend. If you want to break into children's apparel design you don't need to attend an event about sourcing shoe manufacturers in Brazil.
- Be at your best. Yes, many events are in the evening after a long days work but perk yourself up before you head into the event. Listen to your favorite song in the car, look at a picture that inspires you toward your career, pinch your cheeks a couple times, and even have yourself a good laugh. It will make a HUGE difference!
- Talk to someone you don't know. This may seem obvious but if you walk into an event and never say a word to anyone you might as well not have gone! Smile, take a deep breath and start talking. People love to share their knowledge so when in doubt ask a question.
- Don't be a clique. Shy? Maybe brought a friend or two with you to help calm your nerves? That's fine but make sure you don't close yourself off to others by only talking to your friends.
- Follow up. You may not meet someone at every event that you want to keep in touch with. When you do, make sure to follow up! Get their digits, follow them on twitter, find them on Facebook and LinkedIn, or even send them an old fashioned email. Don't let all that work go to waste by not keeping in touch with the connections you make.
